Vietnam Strengthens Its Role in ASEAN Power Connectivity

New cross-border transmission links and long-term grid planning are strengthening Vietnam's position in regional electricity trade and ASEAN energy connectivity.

Vietnam and ASEAN Power Connectivity

Vietnam's power system is becoming more closely connected with neighbouring countries as electricity demand rises and ASEAN pursues deeper regional energy cooperation. Cross-border links can diversify supply, support renewable-energy exchange and strengthen the technical foundation for a more integrated regional market.

A 500 kV link brings wind power from Laos

The Monsoon-Thanh My 500 kV transmission line in Vietnam was energized in January 2025. According to Vietnam Electricity, the Vietnamese section is approximately 44.71 km long, represents investment of more than VND 1.1 trillion and enables the import of 600 MW from the Monsoon wind project in Laos.

The project is significant because it combines cross-border electricity trade with renewable generation and high-voltage transmission. It also illustrates the coordination required between generation schedules, grid connections, technical standards and system operation across national boundaries.

Regional links are part of long-term planning

The revised Power Development Plan VIII covers transmission systems at 220 kV and above and includes interconnection works with neighbouring countries. EVN's published information also records existing links with China, Laos and Cambodia and additional projects that increase import capacity.

Energy securityMultiple supply routes can add flexibility when domestic demand, hydrology or generation availability changes.
Renewable integrationCross-border exchange can help connect renewable resources with load centres across a wider regional system.

For cable and grid suppliers, these projects can involve conductors, optical ground wire, high-voltage equipment, substation systems, protection and control, telecommunications and specialized testing. Cross-border infrastructure also places a premium on interoperability, documentation and coordination between utilities and contractors.

Vietnam's position in the ASEAN power landscape

Vietnam has one of Southeast Asia's largest and fastest-developing electricity systems. Its geography links southern China, Laos, Cambodia and major coastal load centres, giving the country an important position in mainland Southeast Asian energy connectivity.

Regional integration will remain technically and commercially complex. Transmission capacity, power-market rules, system security and project finance must progress together. Even so, the Monsoon-Thanh My project demonstrates that cross-border renewable electricity exchange is already moving from regional ambition into operating infrastructure.

Industry interpretation: Regional connectivity can create infrastructure opportunities, but individual interconnection projects remain subject to national planning, bilateral agreements and utility procurement.
